Can I get TV headphones that will work with the TV sound still on so that I can listen w/o deafening my family?
ByI purchased some wireless headphones but when you plug them in it cuts off the tv sound. I want to get sound from both the tv and the headphones so that my wife can watch the same programme without having the volume too loud.
You need to get an RCA to 3.5mm adapter and connect to the audio output on the TV, if it has one.

Buy an RCA to stereo jack and attach to the audio out on the rear or side of TV. Picture at the following link:

Available at Walmart,Kmart,Sears,Radio Shack, and others.
You may need to adjust audio output in your audio menu.

Just buy ordinary TV headphones… (with a long cable) some have volume controls but even at "Max" it’s no louder than the general volume… BUT With most modern TVs you can adjust the level of the Headphone output… and fix that level. Then your family can use the normal volume control for the speakers. (Check out your TV instruction guide to see how)
Sorry I didn’t see your added comment…. The first answer might work But unless your Wire less head phone have a built in Amp I doubt it… you can always try

the problem is the socket on the tv set has a pair of switch contacts to disconnect the internal speaker when you insert a jack plug. The only way round this is to short out the switch. the problem is this involves getting into the tv and working on the printed circuit board. this needs to be done by a tv service engineer, please do not attempt this yourself.

mmm…..what you need is an amplifier box running a microphone from one end and headphones from the other. I don’t know if you can buy these commercially, but I made one from this:
http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?moduleno=220058
Replace the speaker with a headphone socket and use a pair of 8 ohm headphones and it works. I ran the power from a transformer doing six volts; it has to be a regulated output. I put the mike insert into an old pen case (non metallic) and made a stand for it to sit next to the TV unobtrusively. On a small pair of headphones it put about 46 dB right into my ear, and so you may wish to include a volume control in it along the headphone line.
